Board Director – Job Description
Authority / Responsibility:
The Board of Directors is the legal authority for the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra Association (RDSO). As a member of the Board, a Director acts in the position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance and management of the affairs of the Association.
Qualifications / Skills:
Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of Board governance: policy, finance, advocacy, marketing, communications, artistic programming, grants, sponsorship, fundraising, event planning, community building and /or personnel.
Term:
Directors are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Directors serve for a three-year term with the option to serve an additional three-year term for a total of six years.
Requirements:
- Commitment to the work of the Association
- Willingness to actively participate on at least one committee
- Attendance at bi-monthly Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting
- A time commitment of at least ten hours per month, (includes Board preparation, meeting and committee meeting time)
- Be informed and publicly support the Association’s programs
- Prepare for and participate in the discussions and the deliberations of the Board
- Be aware and abstain from any conflict of interest
Major Duties:
- Prepare and participate in Board discussions and deliberations
- Governing by the broad policies developed by the Board
- Establish overall long and short-term goals, objectives and priorities to meet the needs of the community
- Recommend policy to the Board
- Promote membership and interest in RDSO’s programs and activities through community networking, etc.
- Serve on and carry out the work of a committee
- Monitor and evaluate the RDSO’s effectiveness through a regular review of programs and activities
- Foster a positive working relationship with other Board members and staff
Evaluation:
Board self-evaluations are conducted annually.
Application Process
Recommended and interested candidates will be screened by Board representatives, and nominated for election at RDSO’s Annual General Meeting.
