South Asian Legal Clinic of British Columbia (SALCBC) – Board of Directors

South Asian Legal Clinic Society of British Columbia Call for Board Directors

SALCBC is currently inviting applications for Board Directors. Serving on our Board is an excellent way to contribute meaningfully to access to justice for the South Asian diaspora. SALCBC was founded in 2019 by a group of South Asian lawyers and has a mission to:

  • Conduct free, not-for-profit, multilingual legal advice and information clinics for low-income British Columbians who identify as South Asian and equity-seeking groups;
  • Educate British Columbians who self-identify as South Asian about their legal rights through legal education seminars;
  • Undertake legal research and advocacy on proposed government legislation and policies that disproportionately and/or negatively affect British Columbians who identify as South Asian; and,
  • Provide legal resources for community-based organizations and facilitate grassroots community organizing efforts for British Columbians who identify as South Asian.

Our Board is responsible for stewardship of the organization and for maintaining its activities and growth. The Board takes on operational activities alongside determining the overall strategic direction of SALCBC. We are looking for diverse individuals to join us, particularly those who:

  • Have an interest in our work with South Asian community members;
  • Have capacities and knowledge that add to the current Board’s skill-sets;
  • Have education and experience that supports the representation of our Board with partner organizationsand within the broader BC population; and,
  • Are committed to the growth of sustainable solutions for South Asian community members.

Our Board meets on the second Monday evening of every month via Zoom. Board members are expected to attend the majority of board meetings as well as any strategic planning sessions and the annual general meeting. Every Board member is to serve on or lead one of the organization’s working groups or standing committees. Board members should be prepared to dedicate 5-10 hours a month depending on the role.

We are seeking board members with experience in marketing, communications, social services, legal, non-profit fundraising and/or governance.

If interested, please send a resume and cover letter by April 18, 2022 to info@salcbc.org. Please describe why you would like to join SALCBC and how you will contribute to its stewardship. Interviews will be scheduled with selected candidates. All Board members will be elected at the AGM for a renewable one-year term. Please see www.salcbc.org for more information.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the South Asian Legal Clinic of BC!
