External Boards & Committees – Geoscientists Canada – Professional Practice Committee Member (2024)

The Opportunity

Geoscientists Canada exists to serve the profession of geoscience in Canada. The organization works on behalf of its members regulatory bodies that register geoscientists and regulate their practice in Canada’s provinces and territories.

APEGA is seeking one professional member (P.Geo. or P.Eng.) to serve on the Geoscientists Canada Professional Practice Committee. The successful candidate will have a solid commitment to enhancing and supporting the professional practice of geoscience and, ideally, a strong understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technology. The committee meets monthly to review, consider, and provide guidance on matters of geoscience professional practice, and to review, document and develop geoscience professional practice considerations for potential use by geoscience regulators and practitioners, as well as other stakeholders.

The Impact

The rise of AI tools, such as ChatGPT and generative products, are changing nearly every profession at an unprecedented rate. These tools are growing in capability and utility daily. How they will ultimately affect the practice of geoscience is still unknown. By serving as a member of the Professional Practice Committee with Geoscientists Canada, you will have an opportunity to review and develop professional practice guidance documents.

Time Commitment
1x one-hour virtual monthly meeting, 2-3 hours technical reading, minor technical writing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with assigned readings and participate in webinars to stay abreast of the latest developments in AI ethics and professional practice generally.
  • Provide insights into the use of AI in professional settings, especially ethical considerations, impact on reserves and resources reports, use of generative products and data, and content creation and copyright requirements for technical publications.

Volunteer Benefits Required Qualifications
  • Earn CPD credits for time donated.
  • Expand your professional network.
  • Give back to your profession.
  • Volunteering is your ticket to exclusive APEGA event invitations, recognition gifts, and long-service awards.

  • Practicing or retired professional member with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the profession.
  • Although the ideal candidate will be a professional geoscientist with a strong understanding of artificial intelligence technologies and how they apply to geoscience, professional engineers working in the area of AI are encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of professional practice guidelines and ethics, especially in relation to AI.
  • Familiarity with continuing professional development requirements for geoscientists is highly desirable.
  • Background in energy or mining industries, with a focus on reserves and resources, will be considered an asset.
