Rowan House Society – Board Chair Job Description

The Rowan House Society is a not-for profit organization dedicated to providing shelter and services to families experiencing domestic abuse in a rural community, a support that is unfortunately very needed. While the Rowan House Society is most known for their women’s shelter, it is important to note, they are much more than just a shelter. The Rowan House Society collaborates and liaises with schools and community support services to bring awareness and education to our youth, is piloting a support program for men, and is seeking ways to efficiently be present in the community to provide confidential counseling.

As a not-for profit organization, the Rowan House Society is dependent on volunteer-based board to provide governance on the operations and financials. At this time, we are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Chair of the Board to lead the team. The Chair of the Board is responsible for the Board’s integrity and the effectiveness of its governance process.

Board Chair Leadership

  • Responsible for the supervision of the Executive Director, including performance management.
  • The Chair is the official spokesperson of the Rowan House Society Board and represents the Board with all external bodies and groups and at related functions. These duties may be delegated to other board members, or the Executive Director as required.
  • Keeps self and board focused on long-term perspectives, strategic issues, policy directions, and ensures thorough and objective deliberation.
  • Ensures the Annual Report is prepared in a timely manner.

 

More specifically, the Board Chair:

  • Provides leadership and promotes public awareness, is the spokesperson for Rowan House Society.
  • Coordinates and supervises the affairs of the Board.
  • Chairs all General Meetings and Board meetings.
  • Is the Chair of the Executive Committee.
  • Is an ex-officio, non-voting member of all Board Committees.
  • Prepares agendas for Board meetings.

 

Desired Experience:

  • Previous board experience in an executive capacity for a full term.
  • Keen interest in the field of social services, with emphasis on domestic abuse.
  • Business based background, with ability to demonstrate sound business acumen.
  • Strong understanding of financials; able to identify budget gaps and opportunities.
  • Superior communication skill: able to speak at public functions, skilled at meeting facilitation, able to provide constructive and motivational feedback.
  • Proven ability to engage and lead high functioning teams, while having fun. This is volunteer based.
